Woodard, Nathaniel

Woodard, Nathaniel
(1811–91)
   Educator.
Woodard was born in Essex and he was educated at the University of Oxford. He is remembered as the founder of a series of schools. He outlined his plans in his Plea for the Middle Classes and among his foundations were Lancing, Hurstpierpoint and Denstone. Although educational ideas have changed since the mid nineteenth century, these schools still reflect a strong High Church ethos.
